Here's another set of unliberated gems I found whille tripping through YouTube, and this one has some historical significance. It's from the first night of the Tormato tour (Tour-mato?) in Rochester, NY, at the War Memorial. Forgotten Yesterdays seems to think this show took place at the Rochester Auditorium Center, but the ticket stubs included say otherwise. The date is August 28, 1978, about a month before Tormato released in America. Five tracks from the album were performed here for the first time anywhere, including "Release, Release", and they are all included in this recording of this show. The 10th anniversary medley was also performed for the first time, and about ten minutes of it are present here; it cuts out during Jon's quote of the lyrics to "Survival". Additionally, Forgotten Yesterdays also does not list "Don't Kill the Whale" as being performed at this show, but this recording proves it was. It comes after "Circus of Heaven", which is the same setlist arrangement as Yes' next concert of the tour in Buffalo, NY, on the 29th. As with the Rich Stadium recording, I am presenting these ripped as .WAV and converted to .FLAC from the YouTube uploads. The only edits I've made to this recording are cutting out some brief moments of machine hiss. Now, the actual music is listenable, but fairly worn. There are also some variations within the actual taping; The cut "Siberian Khatru" and what little is there of "Heart of the Sunrise" sound muffled compared to the other songs, but I don't think they're from a different source. There's also a brief drop out and cut during "Long Distance Runaround" in the medley. What you hear is what you get, and in my opinion, what you get is a pretty cool piece of audio curios. > Song list: 1. Siberian Khatru [cut; only the second half] (5:38) >> Total running time: 53:21 As always, share the files as lossless and go about your day. And don't buy any online, unless it's a rare Highland boot no one's discovered and shared yet. ~Gordon S. (@Blatch) https://anygivendoomsday.wordpress.com/ |

Yes Jon Anderson 138 minutes (2nd Gen Cassettes) Setlist: Release, Release Encore 1: Roundabout
From the vast library of Bill B comes this 2nd gen tape of the 2nd night of the Tormato tour. The background noise remains at the same level throughout, Jon's comments are easy to make out and everyone is pretty clear in the mix. Lots of crazy interplay between Howe & Wakeman... all these early "Release, Release" shows seem to have a very different vibe. GFTO was the final encore which I don't think was planned, but they were all having a ball so went for it. The placement of "Clap" before the big medley may have been the taper's to fit it onto 2 tapes, but I think they really did play it in this order. There's a splice at the end of "Circus Of Heaven" right into the opening strums of the Clap, which is probably the 1st tape flip, definitely followed by the "DKtW". Thanks to the Yesyears box, we can title the little jam they did on this night as "Vevey," and it is an interesting placement leading into OtSWoF. A really cool show. I just love all the commentary made by the tapers during the show. See? There were Yescritics at every tour! The transfers were done quite a while back and Matt was kind enough to do a little bit of tweaking to this. His work was very subtle but I think is an improvement. Both the RAW and De-Hissed versions are included here, so you can now all go and remaster this to your heart's content. 2004 Transfer Details... Sound Studio was used for recording onto the Hard Drive, splitting into tracks, toast was used to burn to discs and thus verify the sector boundaries. The discs were sent to Matt and he did the EQ & dehiss, so then add to that lineage the another CDR and CDR > xACT (secure extraction) > Sound Studio (edit and tracking) > AIFF > CDR(1) 2008 Details... YES – "Ten True Boston Summers", a.k.a. “B78” DATE: 30 August 1978 TAPER: The unsurpassed Mr. Barry Rogoff ORIGINAL ART: Gromek [Vol. 1] [Vol. 2] Endless, endless thanks to the Taper – this nearly if not completely miraculous AR wouldn’t exist for us to enjoy without his bravery and expertise, then and now Source and mastering effort – For 1978 a top quality audience cassette made with one of the best then-available decks captured all the energy official, SBD-based "live" releases rarely if ever do, and in as much or more detail. Here in all its digitally transferred glory is the original master itself. “I remember being unsure as to how to aim the mikes at the circular sound system. I didn't see much in the way of monitors on stage, and they would have rotating anyway. So both mikes had to be aimed up at the sound system. I had no idea how much separation was needed to get a good stereo image with balanced levels. So whatever you hear on the recording was my best guess at the time.” Whatever this contributed to any distant properties, I’d call his guess pretty f-g good, especially considering a PA system configuration no one had ever seen before. Perhaps due to cassette type, the recording is hissy for its source yet not bad enough to warrant the primitive chainsaw of currently available digital NR technology. Neither distance nor tape noise is aggravated by any tape generations or the extensive EQ work often needed to overcome them thankfully. “I can't say for sure, but it's possible that the mikes were hand-held at that show. I had a very lightweight, collapsible mike stand that clamped onto anything available, including seats. Unfortunately, it was kind of flimsy and people walking by often bumped into it. It was also prone to breaking at the worst possible time, so I always brought a pair of modified socks that could be used to hold the mikes when necessary. To get a feeling for that experience, try holding an object at roughly head level for two hours.” My arms ache just thinking about it, and it makes this taper’s heroism even more impressive. Some low frequency rumbling during quieter moments may also have been a result of movement [resembles wind gusts]. Like hiss and other noise these will not come out without taking important signal detail with them, so I left them alone. A couple of tape flips had to be trimmed and spliced, and are noticeable but occur between tracks effecting audience sound only. Here’s hoping “B78” adds real joy to many lives. Please share freely but never sell and please keep lossless. Happy time travels! An independent ‘beta test’ listener had this to say meantime: “The Boss Tone of Boston Boston was evidently not a quiet place to see a Fortunately for those of us who weren't there, there “B78” moves to rectify this. There are a lot of Nevertheless, here we have a show with all four A lot of things made 1978 a fantastic and unique year - Ramble On Joe (Thebestofwebsite.com contributor)” …And one of the best music-related writers in the US Pacific Northwest if you ask me :] |

Yes Jon Anderson Tracks 1-5: 1st gen partial cassette source 1.01 Starship Trooper (8.14) Yes and Alison Steele Lineage: FM broadcast -> possibly an open-mic recording from FM radio -> unknown -> audio CD -> Sound Forge -> Noise Reduction -> Audio CD -> EAC -> FLAC What a cool tape this is! I can't emphasize that enough. Alison Steele was possibly Yes Fan #1, but may be #2 if Ed Sciaky holds the top position. Here we have her presenting her interviews of four of the five members of the band backstage before one of their 1978 shows at Madison Square Garden, which one of the band members describes as the "highest" venue of the tour. As I played back these recordings today, Ms. Steele's soothing voice put me in a very tranquil mood. Sadly, her short life was plagued for many years by cancer, and her career was interrupted by her galant fight to survive. I imagine that Yes music is one of the things that sustained her during that awful time. The recording we have here may have been made by holding a microphone in front of an FM radio while the broadcast originated live from New York's WNEW-FM on an unknown date in 1978. The audio quality is fair, in that it sounds like it was recorded through a telephone. (Perhaps it was!) But every word is clear. The recordings contain no music, and the audio files contain no MP3 artifacts. This recording came to me in a trade with no additional lineage that I recorded. While I did not document who sent it do me, and have now forgotten who it was, I'm very grateful to the person who sent it to me. (I suspect they may be reading this now. If so, drop me a line!) Several years ago, I used Sonic Foundry Noise Reduction 2.0 to remove a lot of background noise and bring out the voices. This process introduced some artifacts into the sound. But Noise Reduction ultimately helps the clarity of the audio. NOTE: the only music that appears in this recording comes from Yes "Tormato." In these cases, there are only a few seconds of instrumental music mixed low under Ms. Steele's voice. This was done during the original broadcast. Yes Jon Anderson 130 minutes (complete Low Gen with 1 small patch from 1st gen alternate source) From the incredibly huge collection of tapehead2 comes this low gen tape of the 2nd night of the 4-night run at MSG. On my scale, remembering that this is MSG, I'd give it an "A-" for sound. There is no harp jam tonight, but switching Parallels with HoTS freshens up the second half of the show quite well. And tonight, Rick is the man with the Fun Time Freddy. We would all benefit from hearing more from these 3 nights in the Garden, but as the lifespan of cassettes go, even with pristene care this is the year they will begin degrading into mush. Yes: The Lostbrook Tape Series Volume 127 (Series Finale) This tape surprised me in many ways. For over thirty years, I've had bad memories of "Tormato." Like some critics, I thought of it as one of the last gasps of the progressive era. I'm sure I never listened to the tape other than during the immediate aftermath of the concert. Over the years that it lay forgotten, I had convinced myself that it was poor, both in quality and performance. I couldn't have been more wrong. I was startled to discover that the quality was impressive and the performance was outstanding. Compared to the previous tour, our lower level seats were nothing special, but with the revolving center stage, they were much better September 9, 1978 Recording Equipment: Internal Mic>Sanyo M2533 Tape Deck>(2)Maxell UDXLII C90>Alesis TapeLinkUSB> Audacity>WAV>CQ>FLAC Taper: Lostbrook Disc One 1.01 Young Person's Guide - Close Encounters Intro (2.05) Disc Two 2.01 Starship Trooper (9.27) |

Yes 1.01 Young Person's Guide Intro - Close Encounters Intro (1.49) 2.01 Madrigal (0.49) ----- Message from Relayerman to yessongs.nl: I saw a version of this Yes show, 1978-09-12 Philadelphia, PA, on your site, but it was shorter than mine. I didn't download yours. I took out my tapes and tweaked it. It probably is not as good a quality as what is on your site, but it does go all the way to the end of Awaken. The crowd is overpowering in a lot of places, but still listenable. Relayerman |

Due to my scanner being down I am unable to produce art work at the moment. I did find a picture of the cover in my travels on the net and added it for the moment. I noticed one scratch at the start of "I've Seen All Good People" and hope there are not others I've missed. I have not seen this boot in circulation and I am happy to add it to the trading community. Cygnals CYG005 For Free Trade Only! |

YES - Inglewood, California Although there are several great soundboards from this tour including London 10-28-78, Qubec 4-18-79, and Chicago 6-9-79, this performance and the excellent quality of this audience recording stand out to me. In particular, I must have 60 different versions of Siberian Khatru, but Howe's solo at the end on this evening really shines. There's just a pure sound to the band during this period of touring that comes through in this recording. I can't explain beyond these points that I really like this particular show. The credit for this recording goes to someone in YES trading circles (my apologies at not remembering) Remastered tape>CD-R tree trunk>CD-R tree branch>CD-R tree leaf>EAC>flac Jon Anderson 1978-10-05: 1978-10-05: Bonus tracks: Never profit from free music; do not encode to mp3; share the joy of sound generously; |

Never Buy or Sell a PRRP Release!! Visit http://prrp-music.com for more. PRRP034- YES Disc 1: Disc 2: YES Here we go again. Yes had just finished a well deserved vacation. The new album, Tormato had just been released in September and the band decided to kick off the supporting tour in the United States. After 38 shows in 43 days of a North American tour they took a 15 day vacation. Now, rested, Yes were ready to begin a brief stretch of shows at the famous Wembley Arena –formally known as the Empire Pool- in their home country of Great Britain before returning again to America. As a 12,000 seat venue Wembley Arena required a bit of modification to accommodate the Yes show because the Tormato Tour was presenting Yes with a Theatre-In-The-Round circular stage. Six shows were performed over a five night period and this recording presents the performance from the third evening. Notes from the Re-Master The master recording for this event had recently become available and was the starting point for this remaster project. The most obvious problems with the recording were the flat dynamics and the speed error. Once the speed was corrected the tape and audience noise was attenuated using multiple techniques. Tonality adjustment was needed to compensate for the venue as much as possible and then the dynamics were enhanced to restore some natural variability to the sound. A ring was found during difference parts of the show and was notched. Re-tracking was used to separate |

Heres something i think you will like. Its the Rick Wakeman solo from the legendary Wembley 1978 FM broadcast that is missing from just about every version of this show out there. I randomly found this online about 6 years ago. The sound quality is excellent, although its a very low-rate (80kbps) mp3. From what i remember, this was posted somewhere in the comments section of a blogspot that once posted this Wembley show because so many people complained that the show posted was incomplete. And then a random person uploaded this from their personal tape of the original FM broadcast in a comment on the post. Too bad this person didnt post the whole show. Maybe he had the missing 'Future Times/Rejoice'...who knows...Enjoy!! Michael |

Yes ** Low-circulation recording ** FIRST SHOW OF THE 1979 TOUR Lineage: first-gen or master tape -> CD audio -> EAC -> FLAC This recording has not been altered or remastered. It is a straight rip from the CD's provided by Alec B. and Paulie. Sounds good overall. The band sounds a little rusty, like they didn't rehearse much between the last show of the 1978 tour and the first show of 1979. And there are some mix problems, like synths and guitars that aren't amplified. Just makes it more interesting, as it's not one of Yes's typically perfect shows. Forgotten Yesterdays shows "Tour Song" in the set, between "Awaken" and "All Good People." It's not on this recording and I suspect Yes didn't play it on this occasion. After all, what rhymes with "Kalamazoo?" Enjoy! Lineup : Disk 2: This article was posted by Janine L. Gould on Forgotten Yesterdays along with the setlist and other information about this concert: Strong, powerful performance: Yes has long been rejected by rock press elitist publications like Rolling Stone for their progressive and sometimes mystical approach to music. It seems as though Yes has been slagged because their roots lie in the areas of folk, pop and classical music instead of blues and R & B. What it boils down to is that Yes music is ahead of its time. But there were enough fans at Monday night's concert to prove that their music wasn't so far ahead of itself as to be unlistenable. Last year Yes celebrated their tenth anniversary as a band, which says a lot for their musical vitality and growth as well as their popularity. There has long been a legion of very vocal but unrecognized (by the press) Yes fans, enough to give the band seven gold albums (every release from The Yes Album to Going for the One). The show at Wings was a continuation of Yes's devotion to the importance of live performance, and for the opening date of a tour, they came off looking healthy and happy to be on the road again. Yes opened with "Siberian Khatru," a tried-and-true number that got off to a somewhat slow start. There were some balance problems in the vocals and guitar which were corrected during the course of the song. Drummer Alan White picked up the pace towards the end, giving impetus to Steve Howe's extended guitar solo. It seemed as though Yes wasn't too sure about this song as an opener, although they've opened with it in previous performances. Chalk it up to pre-concert jitters and first-gig-of-the-tour hesitation. The majority of the material came from Yes's latest LP, Tormato ("Future Times/Rejoice," "Circus of Heaven," "Don't Kill the Whale," "Madrigal," "On the Silent Wings of Freedom") with selections from The Yes Album ("Perpetual Change," "Clap," "Starship Trooper," "I've Seen All Good People") and Fragile ("Heart of the Sunrise," "Long Distance Runaround," "The Fish," "Roundabout") making up the foundation. Yes also went back to their second album for "Time and a Word" and incorporated the final segment of "Gates of Delirium" ["Soon"] into "Perpetual Change." The material from Tormato didn't seem comfortable to the band in a live context. These songs had a confining feeling, as if their newness hadn't yet been fully tested in live performance. The difference between these songs and older tunes like "Starship Trooper" and "Perpetual Change" lies in their structure. Yes's music became much more compact on Tormato, and this may have created an obstacle in live interpretations. The older songs were much looser, and allowed the band to explore new areas within the songs' original construction. The highlight of the concert was "Awaken" (from Going for the One). Anderson's voice had been hoarse a few songs earlier, but Rick Wakeman's solo gave him a chance to revitalize his vocal cords before embarking upon "Awaken." Anderson's tambourine/maraca instrument, combined with his sidestepping circles around his mike in countermovement to the stage's motion, gave him the look of a tribal chanter invoking a deity. "Awaken" in a live context has an overwhelming power which overshadows the Going for the One version. The keyboard passages weren't as lush as the original, but then Wakeman doesn't have four hands -- although at times it wasn't certain that he *didn't* have more than two hands. "On the Silent Wings of Freedom" ran a close second to "Awaken" in terms of energy and impressiveness. Already a powerful song on Tormato, Yes's performance of it became supercharged. After almost two hours of continual *oomph*, it didn't seem possible for Yes to crank the energy up any higher, but they did it. Bassist Chris Squire seems to be the central powerhouse, using his dynamic bass lines to urge White on to new rhythmic heights. "Your Move" gave the audience a chance to do a concerted clapalong, led by Squire and Wakeman. "All Good People" received a sort of blues treatment in White's accenting -- as for Squire, his patterns got even more intricate. Besides, Squire could barely sit still long enough to play a walking bass line: his hands are too well-trained to those convoluted yet funky constructions which have often been imitated by other bassists. The absence of props on this tour marks a change to a more basic presentation for Yes. In the past they have utilized highly stylized stage constructions, usually patterned after Roger Dean's cover art. The set-up of the stage this time around centered attention on the stage, which revolved throughout each song (except for "Clap"). Yes retired to their dressing rooms after two hours amidst a thunderous standing ovation, and I *mean* thunderous -- the applause and cheering reached a painfully high point as the band left the stage. The crowd kept up that level of sound, and made even more noise when the band returned. The audience was up and dancing when Yes kicked into their encore, "Roundabout." Wakeman again led the clapalong when he wasn't busy playing, and seemed to be quite happy to be with Yes again as a band member. Signals flew between White, Howe and Anderson to stretch the ending of the song: get loose and be crazy was the sign, and that's exactly what happened. Yes's first Top 40 single and their best-known song crashed to a close and brought the audience to its feet for another standing ovation. Going through individual performances would be tedious. Suffice it to say that Yes sounded as professional and efficient as they ever have in concert, and that the solos were generally inventive and intriguing. Steve Howe still has his quirks, as Anderson once commented. But the ovation he received after "Clap" indicated that the crowd enjoyed those quirks. "I think Steve likes playing Kalamazoo more than any of us," Anderson added when the applause died down. Certainly, Kalamazoo will welcome Yes again. |

Yes **Low-circulation recording** Lineage: first-gen or master tape -> audio CD -> EAC -> FLAC This recording has not been altered or remastered. It is a straight rip of the audio CD's I received from Alec B. and Paulie. Tracks are as they were found on the CD. This one's dedicated to the hard-core completist and people who were at the show. There's some noticable speed warble and the overall sound is distant. TheTooleMan Lineup : Tracks Disk 2: |

Yes Radio station master! (I think) **Low-circulation recording** Lineage: radio station master reel (probably) -> audio CD's -> EAC -> TheTooleMan's tricks of the trade -> FLAC Don't let the ragged beginning of this recording fool you. Although it is missing the first two songs of the concert, the quality improves dramatically after several minutes, and starting with the long medley it sounds really great. This seems to be a professional recording, with open mics mounted on stands -- that's my best guess. Sounds like a lot of the monitor mix was picked up by the mics, as it was very heavy on the midrange frequencies. I took care of that in the master. I wonder if this recording was made by the radio station that promoted the concert, WLRS. If so, maybe there's a better copy in their archives, or one that can be transferred more cleanly to the digital domain. Enjoy! From ForgottenYesterdays.com: Date : Friday, April 13, 1979 Tracks: 2.01 Wakeman Solo (6.08) The following paragraph, written by John Mock for Forgotten Yesterdays, explains the award ceremony track: "Here's some trivia for you...the Tormato tour stop in Louisville on 4/13, 1979 was advertised as a 'big surprise' by the local heavyweight rock station, WLRS-102 FM as Yes was the 102nd concert promoted by WLRS... they attempted to get Pink Floyd as a surprise band to make a double bill....that fell through and their last stop they tried to pull out was free beer for the sold out Freedom Hall crowd, but the promoter would not go with that due to liability and under-age drinking concerns....so the 102nd concert for WLRS turned out to be anti-climactic, just a normal Yes show that was POWERFUL....I need another fix of On the Silent Wings Of Freedom!" |

Yes ** Liberated bootleg ** The review by Bill Glahn, posted on Forgotten Yesterdays and copied below, tells you most of what you want to know about this recording, though he makes a few incorrect assertions. Here's the rest of the story: The performance is as good as the sound quality, which makes for a real treat. I discovered I have two versions of this recording, one of which has small cuts during the ambience and some lead-in notes between songs. I used the most complete version to create this edition. Bill Glahn may have been referring to the other version in some of his comments. Contrary to the review, I never found a cut or edit in Starship Trooper, but there was a fade-out and fade-in which disguised a tape flip during "The Fish" in the long medley. I cross-faded the two parts on the beat so the music never stops. This is a big improvement. The front cover album art looks more like YesShows than Relayer. Prof. Goody and I were in agreement about the pitch correction factor required for disk one of the set, but disk two was not as fast as disk one. Goody later agreed with my assessment: 49 cents lower for disk one, and 36 cents lower for disk two. You'll find the drums and bass pack a bit more wallop in this version, and there's a little more ambience, too. You can't go wrong with this one. TheTooleMan 1.01 Close Encounters Intro (1.23) 2.01 Starship Trooper (12.12)
Review posted on Forgotten Yesterdays: YES "CIRCUS OF HEAVEN" Some of our readers may recall a release from several years ago titled "Rehearsal Tales", a single CD containing a partial show from Quebec, April 18, 1979. Although the track listing had a couple of errors, the music contained on that disc represented the finest quality available of any yes concert on bootleg disc. In fact, it rivaled any official release in range, balance, and performance. The original release was very limited in numbers and it wasn't long before some of the bigger bootleg companies began making their own copies of this disc. As the story goes, Yes was recording many of their 1979 shows on a mobile multi-track studio for release of an official live set to celebrate the groups ten year anniversary. The project was even announced to the press and then scrapped. Somehow (you know how these things happen!) a stereo mix-down from the quebec show found its way into the hands of a collector who unwittingly traded it to a bootlegger. Of course, as usually happens with bootlegs of outstanding quality, the bootlegger himself was bootlegged (at least 3 different times). All versions of this single disc were worth picking up, as little was lost in the transition from one CD to the next. That is until now. Dynamite Studio, a Japanese outfit with reasonably good circulation in the US has finally released the complete show, making all the previously available single CD versions obsolete. This double CD is nearly flawless! I say nearly because there is one minor edit towards the end of "Starship Trooper" which also appeared on the "Rehearsal Tales" disc. This distortion is said to be on the original master tape, and indeed it seems that is probably the case. The highs on this CD don't get any higher. The bottom end will rattle your walls, but, save for the mentioned segment, they will rattle your walls with perfect clarity. This set HAS to rate in the top 10 boots of all time. You can even hear the whale songs that Yes used between songs, for goodness sake. The audience is almost invisible in the mix. The ICE newsletter has occasionally coined the phrase "bootleg hall of fame" in their writings. If I had the opportunity to make my nominations for this mythical establishment, this would rank right up there with Led Zeppelin's "Jennings Farm Blues" and the Who's "From Lifehouse To Leeds" in importance. And it would take a back seat to no one in terms of sound quality. "Relayer" artwork has been implemented on the front cover with a fabulous photo of the band and their stage set-up during a soundcheck on the back. Holy Cow, I think we've got a winner! -Bill Glahn- |

**Remastered** by thir13en MY FAQ: http://zombtracker.the-zomb.com/forums.php?action=viewtopic&topicid=1232 A killer Yes show, one of the better known boots from them, and right at the end of their big 70's run. Not too far away, like it or hate it, is the "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" years. For me, it wasn't as good as this. All the hits and then some! This needed the boost, so it got it. Here is the companion interview I posted about on the Yes - Toronto 4-20-1979 show. I actually got the facts a little skewed: it wasn't a female caller, it was a male caller. I've corrected the post on that torrent (I odn't know why I thought it was a female; had a brain fart I guess). I was going through some old CDs laying around my desk and I came across one labeled Yes 4-27-79 Madison, WI. I have no idea who I got it from. So I looked at my Yes collection list and it was not on there. I ripped the CD and found it to be one 25 minute track. I popped it into Sound Forge and found that it was only the last 25 minutes of the show, but it was a soundboard! So now it's in my collection and I'm posting it on DIME for those that want it in their collection. I don't do artwork nor do I have any for this short show, but I did include the 500x500 one I made for my iPod so you have something (it's not very good, but does the job for me). If anyone has a more complete version of this please post it! It is not on Remy's site nor does Forgotten Yesterdays say there is a recording of it. Yes 1. Awaken (ending only) Enjoy! Relayerman |

LDB Special Series #191 Out of my 7,000+ shows and radio broadcasts, I have many concerts that were special for some reasons: the setlist, the musicians, the venue or unexpected events. These are the ones I'd like to propose you. Most of these come from my cassettes collection, so they will be released at a slower pace than my Master Series! But you won't be disappointed! DO NOT share this music on mp3, just convert it for your own use. Sharing mp3's is the right way to make me stop sharing music here. YES 2.01 And You And I (10.40) TT 136:18 Jon Anderson (Vocals) This one was traded to me as soundboard and I see it is labelled as such in some websites. Tormato had already been thoroughly promoted the previous year and only two songs remained in the set from their latest effort. (”Arriving U.F.O.” would appear in a few shows in the final week). It began on the west coast in Fresno on May 24th. Following Fresno Yes played two nights in Long Beach, and In Colours Of Jade captures the second night utilizing an excellent audience recording. It’s very detailed and clear with nice definition in the individual instruments. The bass and lower frequencies nicely compliment the upper register. It’s loud without distorting the recording and creates a heavy atmosphere to the show. There is a cut eight seconds in to “I’ve Seen All Good People,” but otherwise it is complete. Yes replaced the “Firebird Suite” introduction with two intros: an except from Benjamin Britten’s “Young Person’s Guide To The Orchestra” and a bit from the score to “Close Encounters Of The Third Kind” written by John Williams. “Siberian Khatru” and “Heart Of The Sunrise” open the show, the same dark opening from the Yessongs triple live LP from six years before. “Saturday night southern California” Jon Anderson says before they continue with a lively version of ”Future Times / Rejoice,” followed by a song “for the imagination,” “Circus Of Heaven.” The half hour long big medley is a conscious nod to their history, hitting upon all of the previous incarnations of the band including Relayer. Anderson next introduces the “fast and furious fingers of Steve Howe.” Howe plays “Clap” with an interlude of “Surface Tension” from The Steve Howe Album which had just hit the record store shelves. Devastating versions of “And You And I” and “Starship Trooper” continue the show. The latter sounds curiously dated in this recording, sounding like an old relic resurrected for the night. Rick Wakeman’s solo includes excerpts from The Six Wives Of Henry VIIIand ends with a rare quote from Gershwin’s “Rhapsody In Blue.” The ends with “Awaken,” the only song in the set from their preivous album Going For The One. Wakeman favors very deep, heavy tones on the keyboards lending a strange tone to the piece. The encores begin with the “Tour Song” which has the same melody as other stops but with lyrics specific to partying in Long Beach on a Saturday night. “Roundabout” is introduced as “The Long Beach Boogie,” ending the evening. Lighthouse have been releasing their Yes titles of late on CDR labels such as Amity. It’s surprising to see them release two Yes silvers at this time. Their choice of tapes is erratic. In Colours Of Jade is a very good release worth having while Master Degree, released at the same time, is not. Yes were a hot band several years ago and had many great silver pressed titles released, but those days are past. |

Yes **Low-circulation recording** Lineage: master or first-generation tape (my best guess) -> audio CD -> EAC -> TheTooleMan -> FLAC I discovered I had this recording in my archive after receiving several other 1979 recordings from Alec B. and Paulie. Turns out this one came to me years ago from Alec B. It's not a great tape, but I thought it should be shared for the sake of completeness. The recording is marred by several drop-outs or partial erasures lasting less than one second each. While I couldn't do anything about these drop-outs, I did reduce the 60 Hz hum and normalized the audio level to a fairly standard setting. Have fun! Yes Half-decent but rare recording stereo audience recording of Yes as they neared the end of their 1978-79 anniversary tour. Many stage announcements were cut, and one or two songs from the long medley were not captured during the original taping at the show. My best guess at lineage: First-generation tape, engineered with crossfades, fade-outs, and volume adjustments during the dubbing process. Minor level adjustments made by TheTooleMan, June 2011 to eliminate clipping. No other EQ or mastering techniques were applied. Tracks are as they appeared on the CD's I received from PR. Enjoy! I am seeding this show by request. I think its probably been seeded here before, but it does not appear to be on the tracker at the moment. Yes CDs > FLAC > you Disc 1 Disc 2 I originally got this show in a cassette trade years ago and Madrigal was not included, show ran fast, and had some bad spots here and there. Consequently, over time, I managed to get a CD copy from someone else which is what I've presented here. Much better than my tape, but doesn't match the other 2 widely circulated boots of this show, Chicago Of Heaven '79 (Cat Food 002) and Gates Of Heaven (Highland). I have, however, included the artwork for both of those in case anyone is interested. Enjoy! Please Weed http://from1fan2allothers.com PRRP006-YES 1.01 Introduction (0.55) 2.01 And You And I (10.59) Jon Anderson - Lead Vocals, Guitars, Harp and Percussion “Going Around” Yes were in the midst of a grueling 60 show US tour. Tonight’s performance was the 43rd gig since the tour began in April and the 7th night in a row of scheduled work. Only the cancelled show in Kansas City 3 nights earlier –from an unstable roof- gave them a eprieve. But now they were in Chicago, a city they knew quite well. The band had played here 14 times before, if you include the performance the night before this one. The International Amphitheatre was also familiar to the band. They had played this venue 9 times before, with the last visit September 24th 1978. The setlist for tonight was quite similar to what was played during their last visit. For this evening, the guys would replace ‘Silent wings of Freedom’ and ‘Don’t Kill the Whale’ with ‘And You And I’ and a Tour song; the rest of the material would remain essentially the same. DAN HEDGES Notes from the Re-Master Generally, this was a very good radio broadcast recording. Noise reduction was only used in a few selected regions. YES Lineup : 2.01 Starship Trooper (2.15) This is a good story... CD2 is from my cassette , I was at this show. ( it was Alan Whites 30th birthday ) ironically, I noticed years ago the last portion of the show was missing from trade lists and ironically I happened to have it so I sent it to relayerman to work with it. ( I think it was him ) then he sent it back. so it made this show almost complete. but unfortunatelly my cassette 1 was stolen from me along with other cassettes from my car about 1980. I happened to have cassette 2 in my house. sadly And You and I and the first part of Starship Trooper were on cassette 1 and it sounded good also. Had I realized that these MSG shows would concidered some of Yes' best ever I would have kept that cassette in a safer place. anyways this is my rare contribution to the Yes boot world. Its just very weird someone had the first part of the show and I had the last...listening to it I can tell the first part was not my stolen cassette. Ron Kline |

Yes ** Low-circulation recording ** Lineage: unknown gear & tape -> mastering process of some sort -> first-generation tape? -> audio CD -> EAC -> TheTooleMan remaster (2011) -> FLAC Anyone who can identify the taper of this show should let us know so we can give full credit for a good job. This is a very good recording of a fine Saturday night performance. It's a nearly-complete show, the first of two Yes gave in New Haven in 1979. I think the finale of Steve Howe's solo set is missing and was patched with applause where it ends prematurely, and there's a cut in "And You And I" that I've mixed to make it a bit less jarring. The recording sounds great after some careful TooleMan tweaking. There were a few cuts in applause and some fades applied by a previous basement engineer. I cleaned those up, adjusted the track boundaries, balanced the levels of the left and right channels, and equalized the whole shootin' match. No noise reduction was used; there's a slight high-frequency hiss throughout the tape. Jon seems to think he is in Hartford at first, but gets it straight pretty fast. And an explosive sound gets a big reaction just before Jon sings the opening lines of "Heart of the Sunrise." Thanks again to Alec B. and Paulie for another great, rare recording. YES TITLE: [Working] "B79", a.k.a. "The Realization of a Little Imagination" DATE: 19 June 1979 SOURCE: Original master tapes [Maxell XLII-S] recorded with Nakamichi 550 deck and Nakamichi CM-100/CP-1 microphones TAPER: The unsurpassed Mr. Barry Rogoff ORIGINAL ART: Gromek [Vol. 1] [Vol. 2] Endless, endless thanks to the Taper – this nearly if not completely miraculous AR wouldn’t exist for us to enjoy without his bravery and expertise, then and now. When the cheaper speakers begin to fart, remember - it's a true audience sound capture :] REMASTER SUMMARY: Pitch/Tempo naturalization and EQ work to reveal - not mix - existing detail in CEP 2.0 and Izotope Ozone. No noise reduction attempted. Extensive detail below can be read or skipped as preferred, but I will have no mercy on any complainers who have not read it [I will know] ;} Yes in 1979 speaks for itself, here and in any other recording from the tour whatever its SQ. The excitement of a brand new album - never quite the same after TORMATO - had passed with 1978 but as Yes themselves have said the opportunity to focus on new arrangements and interpretations of seasoned works was exciting enough and it shows here. GOING FOR THE ONE and its tour were a bit like CLOSE TO THE EDGE in being a daunting monument to follow up, but Yes pulled off another brilliant remake with their approach to the TORMATO tour if not the album itself, and managed to develop it nicely for 1979's second tour installment. If anything it was an opportunity to simply play, without the pressure of getting this or that performance of a brand new album sounding just a tad better than the night before. Slightly different approaches to everything anyhow, especially the "Big Medley", worked well enough to make them sound almost new again. Probably more than anything else what Yes had in common with straight jazz acts. "Arriving UFO" was a special treat, played rarely if at all during 1978. Source and Mastering Effort – For B79 two primary areas of focus were front and center - 1] The very same brilliant natural detail in the original master recognized by all going in, yet like most from before 1990 or so in need of liberation from analog tape 'encrustations'. 2] Pitch and tempo, which in the original tapes are way, way off due to the common practice of so-setting high end decks at the time theoretically for a better sound capture. Based on my experience with such tapes I’d call the theory highly viable, but would be ashamed to death if I ever left out the needed post-capture correction. Pitch-tempo has been addressed carefully and now matches period studio recordings as well as other original AR masters without similar needs. Many audience recordings are remastered to sound as much like industry ‘live’ releases as possible. That’s fine and a value I share when limited to clarity of detail, but in an AR detail comprises much more than just instruments and vocals. Audience sound, p.a. system output nuances and venue ambience among many other things are paramount and should be conserved as carefully as performance sound unless something enjoys artificially high volume in the recording, as in an obnoxious, constant yeller right next to mikes. While audience volume in B79’s source is prominent, it suffers no such imbalance constant or otherwise, is accurate, proportionate and part of the event’s reality. Taper's section is relatively quiet, and in any case if we hate audience noise so much in an AR we should stick to sbds or heavily mixed industry releases. Therefore I both left it intact and revealed it, along with Yessound. No spot mixing to suppress audience sound was either needed or attempted, and would have resulted in terrible artificial effects transitions throughout the recording anyhow. Band and crowd detail alike are now MUCH more visible. Not to mention much closer to and in some areas beyond that of its 'sister' recording "B78" [Yes, Boston, 30 August 1978]. Both B78 and B79 were unique achievements in audience taping, having detail across the spectrum rivaling many of the best from 1990 and beyond. Even in their case it was largely hidden under many layers of tape noise and related issues. Both required many months of experimental EQ work and testing of results by multiple listeners in a wide variety of playback systems to get their existing detail as fully revealed as it could be without rendering analog noise or distortion intolerable. While B79 oddly does not have quite the degree of high frequency richness and warmth B78 offers it does come within a hair of it, and more importantly enjoys richer midrange presence as well as noticeably lower hiss volume. So rich are B79's mids that together with its excellent enough highs they led more than one 'beta' listener to initially accuse me of trying to pass a sbd off as an AR ;} What you have here is the original capture, unaltered except for EQ work to reveal as much of what the original audience really heard as the recording possibly can. It may even come as a serious shock to many. The entire dynamic range now comes through vastly better than I had hoped it ever would even from such an exceptional source [and because of some problems in it described below]. High frequencies, while still not quite as smooth as B78's, are actually more detailed in some ways. Mids, which had been overwhelming and harsh in raw master and worse in remaster sequences prior to this one, are now as warm as B78's not to mention more 'present'. Lows from kick drum to the entire range of bass guitar frequencies can be both felt and heard in all their complexity, much as the audience experienced them. The listener is cautioned to start with relatively flat tuner/amp settings - the proper AR goal of signal and signal detail as close as possible to the real thing has been achieved and cheaper speakers in particular can be vulnerable. Not my absolute favorite of the tour, but up there. I thought Yes' Madison Square Garden [NYC] performance just a night or two earlier was more vital, especially Starship Trooper and Awaken, but it didn't include "Arriving UFO" and my old 1st generation tape of it has been played at least 100 times too many for a Dime-worthy remaster to be possible. That's made even sadder by its source having also been a Nak 550 original, almost certainly rivaling this one for brilliant SQ and for all I know lost completely to three decades of entropy. If anyone who likes what they hear in B79 ever turns up the original master of "MSG79" please get in touch! The Yes PA mix was also better at times in New York - in this one certain of Wakeman's keyboard channels especially are much lower, most noticeably at different points in "Big Medley" ["Perpetual Change"] and "Awaken". Most of the time though keyboards in B79 come through more clearly than in B78 and but for tape distortion could easily be called studio or sbd quality. Tape noise. It could be a lot worse and actually isn’t as bad as some of what ended up in the officially released THE WORD IS LIVE, but it's noticeable. We are dealing with a 1970s analog AR albeit an excellent one, not a high end DAT from the 1990s or 2000s. The recording and remaster are also so detailed they reveal Yes sound system noise almost never detectable otherwise and frequently confused with tape noise when it is. Concert sound system output flaws are most noticeable during the Howe and Wakeman solos [see taper’s notes below], and during “Gates”’ transition into its “Soon” movement. Tape age and/or wear seem likely factors as well, and this master is reported to have been played more frequently than B78 over the years before quality digital transfer became possible. It probably contributes to both noise and other shortcomings, including some high hat and other metal percussion sounding a bit 'warbled' or 'swirly' throughout [just possibly also a property of sound system output, examined in more detail further below]. Not long into this project I had taken to calling it, jokingly, "Bull Rodeo '79". Anyone familiar with North American bull riding events should quickly understand why. Quite often the very best analog AR sound captures are the most difficult to remaster if goal and approach are getting their natural spectral detail as completely visible as possible without rendering inevitable analog noise or distortion too aggravating. B79 underwent nearly a hundred experimental remaster sequences before the current one was settled on, each suggestive of a bull ridden slightly longer than the one before it, before the rider finally thrown and bull had to be shot [files deleted]. Each one at least did achieve enough for the next one to be built upon. This all resulted largely from midrange so strong in the Yes sound mix it generated several categories of distortion effecting the entire spectrum, especially the high frequencies - not a problem at all in B78 despite its higher tape noise level. Every time detail began to sound like something approaching what the audience heard, high frequencies in particular would become 'dirty' sounding, with a sort of 'ringy', 'ghost' image in the lower parts of certain extreme highs like metal percussion. Sibilant distortion was also bad during many full band at full throttle moments, effecting both vocals ["S"s] and high frequency instruments. All of these are properties of the original analog capture and can be heard in it, but naturally came right out front along with desired detail. The challenge was finding the right EQ sequence for getting that joyous signal detail revealed while keeping the different distortion types at tolerable levels. Between at last achieving the right balance and some limited post-EQ compression, what you have here is the final, most successful effort. Some of this distortion can still be heard, especially the sibilance, but after many a 'dead bull' it's at last no worse than in the master source while signal detail vastly better than anything heard before. The previously circulated effort may remain preferable to some listeners, and while I would never begrudge anyone preferring lower noise/distortion levels to better spectral detail the pitch/tempo correction alone helped make possible getting more signal spectrum revealed without aggravating the distortion problems as much. As always, digital noise reduction technology - from dehissing to sibilant reduction - remains so primitive and counterproductive I refuse to use it unless it's absolutely unavoidable [as in the case of "B76"]. It was not used here, except for some anti-hum/rumble measures in very quiet sections like Steve's solo and parts of "Awaken" - which attack signal too but had to be done. All undesirable noise remains to some degree, but again intact, fully revealed signal was the goal and it couldn't have been achieved without putting up with a higher noise/distortion level. Undesirables remain most noticeable in Steve Howe’s solo – Yes’ engineer really had that acoustic guitar jacked up [see also taper’s notes below] - "Future Times", "Circus of Heaven", "Starship Trooper", "Awaken" and "Roundabout". In them things get rather fuzzy sounding at times, but they still offer far greater detail than EVER before. A scattering of sibilant distortion will still be noticeable throughout, including segments where other distortion problems are least annoying or altogether absent. In consolation I can offer all are 100% better than they had been at several points, and again no worse now than in the raw master. Most importantly, detail even I didn’t think existed is fully revealed. Other source weaknesses include a number of widely scattered of mechanics-generated dropouts, usually microphone cables being jerked around. In one such case the taper and his entourage were desperately trying to get valuable equipment out of harm's way as a drunk was staggering toward it just before "Arriving UFO". The day was saved and the moment is preserved here as a part of the overall event history, not to mention in such crisp detail it almost puts us right there in its midst. Part of what makes an AR an AR. Time constraints and my rather purist nature with ARs dictated my leaving them alone. Most occur only during audience noise anyhow. Last off, beginning about the point of "All Good People" a very strange property of the master recording becomes evident - at best poorly described as a "rushing", "watery" sound most obvious in heavy crash cymbals. It resembles some deliberate effects used in psychedelic recordings from the 1960s and beyond, but here intended by no one, except just maybe Yes' own soundman. A bit of it can be heard in the official LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA video release - also and interestingly during "All Good People". I've also detected it in the opening bars of "Yours is No Disgrace" from YESSONGS, itself at least in part quite likely an 'official AR'. It's most weirdly common in ARs from the 1977 GFTO tour [99% of them including the best ones]. Causation hypotheses range from venue air movement to contemporary cassette technology, but I most strongly suspect phase shifters in the Yes PA system output. No digital or analog remastering protocol or device will remove it, and it could also be a factor in the ‘swirly’ property effecting metal percussion throughout the entire recording as mentioned above. With caveats in mind, enjoy! Please share freely but never sell and please keep lossless. Happy time travels! NOTES FROM THE TAPER: The 360-degree sound system suspended over the rotating stage used in 78, 79, and The 360-degree stage did pose one unique problem: how to aim the mikes to get good I should also mention that there were problems with the sound system at one point. Hopefully Lestat will agree to remaster my recording from 1980. He's not into [Lestat replies – I’ll GLADLY do the DRAMA show, and am looking forward to working on it! If B79 is any indication it’ll be something to behold.] FROM AN INDEPENDENT TEST LISTENER, WRITER AND MUSICIAN: B79 "Arriving UFO" When Yes played the Boston Garden in 1979, ten true summers had come and gone, then slid uneasily into an eleventh. Where the Big Medley seemed a nice way to include past favorites on the band's ten-year anniversary, in 1979 it hinted that the well was running dry. And, in some ways, it was; fans who had attended the 1978 shows may have had future times on their minds, and not just during that song. But the music itself gives no hint of the turmoils backstage: the sound is great, the band plays well, and the songs are smashing. With the return of "Starship Trooper" and addition of "Leaves of Green", it even sounds as if things were getting better. Listen to the Big Medley here, and see if you can keep the volume level down for long: Chris Squire feeding his "Fish" solos to the audience as if by hand; "Perpetual Change" exploding with the same incredible energy that made it impossible to omit from YESSONGS. The revival of "Time and a Word" was subsequently included on YESSHOWS, but without the power of hearing it punch into "Long Distance Runaround". By the time "Soon" draws the medley to a close, it's clear that a year on the road had honed these songs into rapier vehicles, with the band slicing them up every show to the fans' delight. Still, there was a reason the band hadn't put together a new album, and not for lack of ideas: almost everyone put out side projects in 1979. Things would finally come to a head by the end of the year, with the Paris sessions proving that at least they tried. Meanwhile, they had crossed the continent doing shows like this, and it is no wonder that a solo Jon soon found that he missed the band. In 1980, Boston would witness a very different Yes, and the longing would begin for a return to shows like these. Fortunately for us, the intrepid taper who recorded the 1978 show came to this one as well, with fine results: a rich sound and a full spectrum. An earlier version of this was previously released into trading circles, but this version is undeniably, vastly clearer: all instruments can be made out, and the overall sound is much sharper. It's as if the listener was moved from a pretty good seat behind the soundboard to the perfect center just in front.. So join us, the taper, editors, artists, and remaster beta testers of BOSTON 1979, in celebrating this great concert from the last year of the classic Yes era -- thanks to this great sound capture, and an excellent recovery, we can hear it just as if it were happening live before our ears, for the first time, at this very moment. Which is only appropriate since, in some cosmic vibratory manner, it is indeed still happening -- echoed in the very molecules and energies of our beings. Surely Jon would agree :-) |

Yes **Low-circulation recording** Lineage: master or first-gen tapes (my best guess) -> audio CD -> EAC -> TheTooleMan (remaster) -> FLAC The tape starts out a bit rough but gets better. Something happened during "Siberian Khatru" that caused only the first four minutes of the song to be recorded. Sound quality improves with "Heart of the Sunrise," but a bigger improvement comes with the second half of "And You And I," where (I suspect) a better tape was inserted into the recording deck. Sound quality in this remaster is improved over the raw recording. Completists and other Yes-fiends will find the tape enjoyable. Jon mentions Ed Sciaky in his remarks before "And You And I," which had been dropped from most sets at this late date in the tour, and the band seems excited and happy to be in Philly throughout the show. I pulled this out from a CD trade a few years back due to a request I had to seed this. I probably would never have seeded this one as its not all that good a recording. Its very noisy and sounds somewhat distant (check samples). Believe it or not I did tweak it some to make it a tad better. Its not a complete show, but apparently this one has not been circulated that much. The version I got sounds multi-generational. Yes Jon Anderson Disc 1 (Forgotten Yesterdays lists Arriving UFO and And You & I being played, but they are missing here. I have doubts that And You & I was played, but I think Arriving UFO is definitely missing. Maybe an attendee can set the record straight.) Disc 2 CD trade > PC > SoundForge > FLAC > you Enjoy! Yes 1.01 Close Encounters Intro (0.53) 2.01 Starship Trooper (12.00) ----- Message from Relayerman to yessongs.nl: This version of the show replaces my other remaster of the show on your site. It was terrible as you noted. I discovered how bad it was when I was converting my discs for my iPod. So I painstakingly redid the remaster. Unfortunately I didn't have the source tapes that my discs came from for whatever reason, but I think I managed to at least make this a way more listenable show. There were some obvious things I could not fix and the show is still incomplete. There was also a break in The Fish, probably from a tape flip. Regardless, I smoothed out the sound a lot, re-tracked a few things, added some fades where needed. Track listing below has been updated with the times. There does not appear to be an INFO file for this show on your site as the button does nothing. This can still be burned to 2 discs as shown below, but the way I tracked the end of disc 1 and the beginning of disc 2 is such that it can be one continuous show. Relayerman |

Yes ** Low-Circulation Recording ** Here's a rare, fairly good recording of Yes from Alec B. and Paulie. I haven't done much to this one other than rip it (EAC) and FLAC it. Yes is at the end of a two-week run without a night off. Enjoy! Date : Monday, June 25, 1979 1.01 Close Encounters Of The Third Kind Intro (1.00) 2.01 Starship Trooper (11.36) Forgotten Yesterdays lists "Clap" and "And You And I" as if they were both performed. However, I think "And You And I" was probably not performed as "Arriving UFO" had replaced it in the usual set by this point of the tour. |

Yes “Red Stick” - TheTooleMan’s 30th Anniversary Edition Lineage: audience tape -> audio cd -> EAC -> Sound Forge/Vegas -> FLAC A great concert from the last few days of the 10th anniversary “In The Round” tour. Yes Next-to-last show of the 1979 tour! **Low-Circulation Recording** Best guess at lineage: first generation -> audio CD -> EAC -> TheTooleMan (pitch and levels) -> FLAC Overall audio isn't too bad. It's your typical built-in mic cassette deck recording of 1979. The recording ran too fast and was way off-pitch by one semitone. Pitch has been corrected here. The songs have been re-tracked to conform with the usual 1979 show tracking. Volume levels have been normalized. Sounds like someone sits in on keyboards for Roundabout, but I can't make out the name. Enjoy! Date : Friday, June 29, 1979 Lineup : Setlist/Tracks: Disk 2: |
