Notes:
First I wish to thank Tapehead2 for providing me with an excellent raw recording. Without it I would have had fewer options to hear this concert again. This is an approved Tapehead2 release.

And yes, I said, "Again." I did attend this show, and I also tried to record it. I blew the recording. I was being Mr. Frugal and decided that my batteries had enough charge to last through the concert. My recorder did keep recording, but there wasn't enough juice to keep my phantom power supplied to my mics. My actual recording was less than one minute of music and about 2 hours of flat line. From now on I'm putting new batteries in before every performance!

I had a lot of fun mastering this recording. You will find the gory details along with proof of my neurosis included with the files.

Enjoy as you wish and please support these great artists,

2018-03-18

I've been listening to YES for as long as I've had an interest in music. There's nothing quite like them – unique sound, stellar musicianship and, over the years, they've been more creative than most. Still, there's been the odd "twist and turn" (some very odd indeed), and these days is no exception, with classic-era YES members straddled across two touring bands, each playing the music of YES.

Both versions still attract a fair amount of attention, and truth be told I probably favour the other version because of the combination of Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman (Trevor Rabin plays his part well…but then I prefer Steve Howe on lead and rhythm guitar duties).

Whilst not quite sold out, Hall 1 at The Sage is very nearly full of (All Good) people and brimming with anticipation…or at least brimming with as much anticipation as is feasible at our times of life.

Eight O'Clock prompt, lights down and in time honoured tradition Stravinsky's Firebird Suite leads us in (might have been a bit louder, but there you go). The stage set comprises of three video panels at the back of the stage, onto which YES related imagery is shown throughout. At the conclusion, the band take their positions and launch into "Yours Is No Disgrace".

Having seen the "other version" of the band last year, I'd forgotten just how good – and how important to the sound and feel of YES – Steve Howe is. Great touch, and those oh, so familiar tones and textures. His contribution alone made the evening worthwhile…takes me right back.

That said, there are no "passengers" in this band, and whilst Geoff Downes might remind me of Yegglier times (not my favourite, although accept some do like the Drama era) he puts in a cracking shift with enthusiasm.

Two sets. One of classic "hits", the second, largely dominated by a long swim on Topographic Oceans. Whilst well received, from listening to the comments on the way out it seemed to have been a bit of a Marmite moment for some, although the majority (me included) in favour.

Oddly (from a timing perspective), Alan White took to the drum stool half way through Ritual, and remained there for the rest of the show. Hasn't enjoyed the best of health of late (and it shows), but great to see him there in whatever capacity.

Two long "goodnight kisses" closed proceedings with encores consisting of stupendous versions of Roundabout and Starship Trooper (delicious work by Steve Howe on both).

Depending on your point of view, you can be left wishing for Anderson/Howe/Wakeman/White to…do something "together" for the half centenary, or else just be pleased to get bites of two YES cherries this year. As one doesn't seem to be on the cards, I recommend you do the latter, although if there were more of a reUNION, I'd for one would be trying to push my way to the front of the line for tickets.

Notes: This is my 20th concert by a band that calls itself Yes. It's been rare that I've seen the same line-up for consecutive shows and this
was no exception. I really enjoyed the setlist and I also thought everyone played very well. It was fun to see Tony Kaye back on stage for the
first time since 1994. We were in the 27th row, just left of center, five rows behind the mixing desk, which partially obstructed our view.

The stage set was pretty good for the venue. I think the performance was pretty good, but, Jon Davison's voice is a bit shrill in points to my
taste. Steve Howe is the show's main attraction (to me) and he doesn't disappoint, though, the beard isn't doing him any favors. My neighbor
attended with us and, while he's seen Yes at least once before, he's not a huge, knowledgeable fan, asked "who was the old guy they wheeled on toward
the end to play drums?" My wife Lori likes Yes and has seen them herself over 10 times, but, she is not a Steve Howe fan - she sees this version
as "disrespectful" to Jon Anderson's songs - yet, she enjoyed the musicianship and the setlist, too. I kind of agree with her, but, Steve is my
favorite non-Beatle guitarist and I love these songs. If there's a band calling itself Yes playing nearby, I'm probably going to go see it.

Sound is pretty decent - couple of mic bumps, some clappers and nearby talkers, but, nothing major nor frequent. Acoustic sections are quieter
than the rest.

Finally: please don't sell the recording, but, otherwise, do with it what you wish. Share it and trade it, and remember: these and other greats
will not be around forever, so, let's enjoy them while we have them. Best wishes to all of the Yesfans out there and Namaste.

Comments: I know there is a certain percentage of the fandom that does not accept this version of Yes, but I am not one of them. I actually really love this lineup. They are willing to shake the set up, and not just play the typical stuff, and this tour is no exception. The first set floored me! I've always loved "Parallels" and the "QPR" arrangement of "Sweet Dreams" (I wonder if Patrick is going to play on it in Philly). While the second set is more typical, there was something really cool about Alan and Tony joining the rest of them on stage. I actually got goose bumps during "Roundabout"! That hasn't happened to me at a Yes concert in a long time. The band mentioned the rowdy crowd a couple of times, but for once I was lucky, as the rowdiness wasn't anywhere near me. At one point, it seemed that the crowd really distracted Steve during "Leaves Of Green" and he had to take a moment. The recording has minimal audience interference. Sound was crisp and clear where I was sitting. As has been my standard operating mode of late, I made two seperate recordings and used iPhones as the recording devices. This one was done with my old Sound Professional branded AT831's. I've been using these mic's for 13 years now, and they are still going strong. The recording came out very nice.

Artwork is included in the torrent. The photos are from the actual show.

Comments: This is the "alternate" source of this show, as it is one of two separate recordings I made. As I mentioned in the other info file, this was a great show, well played, with a fantastic set and energetic audience which delighted the band (except for maybe Steve, who in the middle of Roundabout asked the crowd "What is your problem?"). The craziness wasn't situated anywhere near me so I was able to pull two really nice captures. This one took a bit more time to polish than
the other one. I still can't decide which of the two are better, but they both sound different enough to tell them apart. I was about three rows behind the left stack, so the sound is clear. There was a bit of harshness around 4800 kHz that I lowered on both recordings, but this one has a bit more detail in frequencies above that and sounds a bit brighter, whereas the other one had better mid-range definition. It's going to come down to personal preference as to which one is "better." I'm truly happy that I made the long trek for this show, as my local show was at a casino with an abbreviated set. My only regret is I didn't try to make another one of these shows when they were in the area.

Comments: This was my 60th Yes concert (counting ARW shows), and the 28th I've recorded. It's been a wild ride! Unfortunately, this one was a bit of a let down. Not because the band was bad or anything, but because this being a casino show, it was a much shorter set. I'm happy that some of the rarities were left in, but it all just seemed so short. I never understood the casino mentality that the show must be short so the people can go back out and gamble. I think if people are going to gamble, they're going to gamble. Why not let the band play the full set and serve them more drinks during the intermission? This was so short, there was no intermission, there really wasn't even an encore. Alan got up from behind his kit after Awaken, but they decided to just play through. This clocks in at about 1:40, where the NJ show I attended last week was about 2:35 (not including the intermission), and six less songs were played at this one.

As has been my norm the last few times out, I made two recordings again. I haven't had a whole lot of luck with the CAFS microphones since I got them. They are very tiny and the sound is amazing considering the size, but when compared to my other mics I don't think they sound quite as good. However this time, they came through! The other recording had a lot of trouble with Billy's bass, which I haven't really experienced since I started using a battery box back in 2007. The CAFS handled it much better, and the whole thing sounds great (albeit a bit short!) This venue isn't my favorite. While the seats are comfortable and the venue is very nice and the staff is friendly, it always sounds a bit boomy. This is the fifth time I saw Yes here, and this is probably the best they sounded.

I decided months ago to skip this show, but then my son surprised me with a ticket for Father's Day. It was a great seat, a little forward of the "sweet spot" (if indeed there even is a sweet spot at The Warner), but all thanks should go to him anyway for the existence of this recording.
